Challenging the rules of the aristocracy of the 19th century, Matilde Penalverde (Adela Noriega) falls in love with Adolfo Solis (Mauricio Islas), a soldier. Her father, an honest man, gave his blessing for the two to get married. Her mother, Augusta (Helena Rojo) on the other hand, is determined to married Matilde with Manuel Fuentes Guerra (Fernando Colunga). Manuel is considered a good catch in the eyes of Agusta because he is an honorable man and has inherited a big fortune. Augusta ignores that Manuel is Joaquin Fuentes Guerra's the illegitimate son who he recognizes as his son on his death bed.
Using intrigue and deception Augusta and her son Humberto (Ernesto Laguardia), sends Adolfo to prison and tell Matilde that he was married. Their plan included Manuel getting the family out of debt. Matilde not knowing the truth out of grief marries Manuel. Adolfo escapes from prison and goes in search of Matilde, but at his returns he discovers that Matilde had married. Desperate, Adolfo finds a way to talk to Matilde and explains what had occurred and where he had been. Swearing eternal love they decide to escape but Manuel discovers them. Manuel takes Matilde to his ranch where he consummates the marriage. Matilde's life is hard and bitter because she doesn't love her husband.
Adolfo has intention of taking Matilde with him and to accomplish this he becomes the administrator of the ranch. Manuel doesn't know the real identity of Adolfo and thus he gives him special treatment. Adolfo after working and getting to know Manuel he realizes and admits to himself that Manuel is an honest man. At this point Adolfo and Matilde realizes that they have been victims of Augusta and Humberto evil plan. One day, Matilde discovers that she doesn't love Adolfo anymore and that she was in love with Manuel and confesses to Adolfo her new feelings.
Afflicted, Adolfo leaves the ranch the same day that Matilde realizes that she is pregnant. But the happiness of Manuel and Matilde of becoming parents doesn't last. Manuel discovers the identity of the administrator and believes Matilde is pregnant with his Adolfo's son. Matilde distraught tries to convince Manuel that the child she is caring is his. Manuel convinced that Matilde has betrayed him can't forgive her. Manuel doubts of his paternity and tells Matilde to leave the ranch. He tries to forget Matilde with Antonia (Chantal Andere). This relationship makes the relation with Matilde worst and they realize they love each other even though they are separate.
Matilde and Manuel reconcile but Mexican rebelion for independence begins and Manuel is disposed of his lands and his money. Manuel is hunted for crimes committed to the country; he joins the insurgents. At the story ends with Manuel returning to the ranch his body on a cart, Matilde hugs him and the question remains was he alive?
